Course Design 2011 gets an Early Start

This year, we've got two parallel programs, a Faculty Learning Community to Improving Student Writing and our Fast Track CDI.
Faculty Learning Community to Improving Student Writing
Participants will pilot online tools and systems, and present their projects at One Day in May, on May 25, 2011. They'll pilot tools and systems for peer-review such as SWoRD, Calibrated Peer Review, Enhanced Insight, Turnitin, Google.docs and wikis.

Fast Track CDI

The Provost's Office is once again providing spring assigned time to develop online courses this spring for offering in the summer 2011 session. Last summer, we offered 37 online courses with 43 sections and a total enrollment of 2,298 or 448 FTES. High-demand upper- and lower-division general education courses are the focus, and will be marketed to all undergraduate students, including our own students who leave San Diego for the summer. The selection process has been completed and the Fast-Track CDI will begin on January 26, 2011. Contact Mark Laumakis (laumakis at sciences dot sdsu dot edu) for more information. Look for another call for proposals in late September/early October 2011.

Library is busy with course design & 21st Century education

Conference Abstract: At SDSU, the Information Literacy and Instructional Services librarians are working in collaboration with several teaching and learning units on campus to strengthen student learning and effective teaching practices. This unique partnership allows us to leverage our resources and expertise for pedagogical design, explore new collaborative and social technologies, and move toward common goals for student learning and faculty development.

Jackson, P. (2009). Developing a Virtual Community: Co-Creating a 3D Library Learning Commons in Second Life. 2009 EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) Annual Meeting. January 20, 2009. Orlando, Florida.
Conference Abstract: Librarians are committed to facilitating collaborative learning in online environments. They recognize the need for innovative ways to stimulate student learning in a digital age in which instruction is not always linked to classrooms or library buildings. This session will present preliminary results of a grant-funded project to create a library learning commons in which students collaborate to explore information literacy topics in the virtual world Second Life. Additionally, the session will provide detail about campus collaborations at San Diego State University that make explorations in information literacy pedagogical redesign possible.
Pam: "This poster presentation reported on my Second Life grant projected, and highlighted the collaborations with pICT and College of ED that made my project possible."

SDSU Library Forum: Jim and I gave this presentation to all library staff and faculty. We discussed teaching and learning theories, the collaborations and history on our campus (including pICT and the CDI), and presented attendees with some teaching and learning scenarios that demonstrate how all of our units can come together to strengthen instruction on campus.
