Engagement seems to be the key to student success, though what engages students can vary from individual to individual. Many students enjoy working on projects that aren’t just exercises but which potentially have an impact on the solution to real problems. Similarly, an engaged faculty and staff potentially makes for a more productive and happier workplace, building community and contributing to student success, as the entire campus works to make successes of us all.
This workshop will examine how the three goals of the new strategic plan: (student success, research and creative activity, and communication and community) can work together to engage everyone on campus. Participants will brainstorm how to engage faculty and staff in bringing about the strategic plan’s goals and will generate ideas for building engagement across campus toward bringing each goal to a successful conclusion.

Adaptive quizzing customizes quiz questions for each student, depending on what that student knows and doesn’t know, instead of presenting the same standard set of questions to each student, irrespective of his or her strengths and weaknesses. The presentation will also include suggestions for best practices and next steps for faculty interested in incorporating adaptive quizzing into their own courses.

Rubrics are a great way to assess performance -- whether it's a process "raters" observe or a product that students submit. They're great for formative feedback or actual grading. Rubrics may be analytic (where each criterion is separately assessed--usually the route to take) or holistic (where all the criteria are simultaneously applied -- enabling an overall judgment). Rubrics can faculty communicate expectations about makes a "performance" of higher or lower quality; students know what to do and are incentivized to do well! Multiple choice tests, are solid assessment tools as well -- but we all know that it's a real challenge to write questions that go beyond factual recall and basic comprehension. Let's take multiple choice tests to new heights by integrating items that assess complex concepts, reasoning, multi-step problem solving, and more -- all without increasing the grading workload.
